The challenge to develop a series of delicate interventions to a beach house originally designed by a renowned artist and architect, provided an opportunity to help redefine the ways in which a client interacts with her home.

The Ground Floor is reprogrammed as a horizontal (cultural) extension of the Venice walk-street. Warm grey, eco-epoxy floor coatings provide a continuous and seamless event space supporting gallery openings, art exhibition, pinball, ping pong, surfboard display and storage, spa get togethers and other social functions often associated with the culture of Venice Beach.
Two vertical interventions allow for an expansion of the existing interior space. A suspended artisanal wall is extended downward towards the entry, folding at the ground plane to become bench - celebrating one’s arrival. A louvered redwood wall screen is extended upward beyond the roof plane, folding horizontally to provide much needed solar shading for the newly commissioned roof terrace. Here, the social culture of Venice Beach is on full display; providing the client a social space with uninterrupted views of the Pacific Ocean.
